Eels- Rags to Rags
Much like Beck, Eels created an eclectic, artsy and angst-riden slacker rock sound that perfectly captured the mood of a generation of 90’s teenagers, right up to the vocals which somehow sounded cooler because of how bored out of one’s skull they sounded. Beck, of course, went on to become a global superstar, while Eels became more of an underground indie favorite; the kind of artist whose mention will inevitably bring a “oh, I remember those guys. They were rad” in response. Eels greatest mainstream success was their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak, and “Rags to Rags” was one of its most immediately accessible songs. The chorus is pure, simplistic bliss; layer upon layer of thick guitar fuzz rides a pop chord progression and nice, driving drum groove to a better place. Great tune.
